Teaching X-6 with a purpose...

Updated: Mar 9, 2019

Applying the practice teaching that I have learned from the past few years, on February 7 at 1:00 in the afternoon, I was finally inside the classroom of X-6 not because of observing or assisting but because of teaching. The said class has been taught by John Lynton and I. As to make the teaching hours equal, we divided the time for this day, thus the next meetings will be my time to have my class teaching.

Task 1. VIDS TO NOTES

In this activity, I have let the students watch several video advertisements to the class. As they watched the video, they were tasked to take down notes for the activity afterwards.

Task 2. OFF TO COUPON RAFFLE

Each of the students got a ticket from the box in order for us to know who will recite. The ticket generator or the projector flashed the number of the ticket. Volunteers were also allowed to answer. Whenever the student recited, they were given points.

The student whose ticket number had been flashed were tasked to share her insights about the videos on advertisement presented. After, Teacher Lynton asked the students who were picked to tell whether the advertisements were effective or not, followed by their explanation.

Task 3. ADvancing Knowledge

This task is for the instructional input. I have then introduced the eight (8) structures of an advertisement: persuasive statements/words; event; consumers; contact; price; venue; date; and time. As I was explaining the about the different structures, I have also asked the students to share through telling the importance of these structures to an advertisement.

Task 4. AD in the box

I then asked the students to find a partner and answer the worksheet given to them.

In order to proceed, they read 3 advertisements provided in the book, Pathway to English.

The students were asked to fill in the boxes sample sentence/s of each structure of an advertisement.

After answering, the class shared their answers for further understanding.

Task 5. CABBAGE GAME

In this activity, the students first read an advertisement before we proceed to a game called Cabbage Game as the students were given a pile of green papers pressed into like cabbage. Every time the music stopped, the student who was holding the cabbage was the one who was tasked to answer the written question in the green paper. This is to evaluate whether the students have understood the advertisement they have read and the lecture.

Task 6. AD TIME

Lastly, we, teachers, asked the students to make their own simple advertisement with the same groupings. They needed to apply the 8 Main Structures of Advertisement discussed earlier in making their advertisement.

We ended the class by taking photos together.

To see the class enjoying the tasks that we have given to them just made my hardships (that have been done in order to come up with such lesson) went away.

After then, at 5:00 PM, I have attended the midweek meeting in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Thanks to little brothers in the congregation, I was able to understand the talks given as they have translated it into English.

Gratefully, an mbak/ a sister in the congreagation and his son, Sebastian, accompanied me in going home through their own ride. Indeed, my day just ended wonderfully!
